From it's inception, blacks have always known that affirmative action has not been a guarantee of success. The conservative and anti-affirmative action arguments have always been phony. In fact, once given an opportunity through affirmative action we have had to work even harder to excel within disciplines in order to be recognized as qualified or meritorious. Affirmative action may have been the invitation to the party, but once admitted, it can't make you dance if you can't dance. On the contrary, afirmative action cantidates have had to both dance and sing do demonstrate the deserve to be considered when compared to many lesser qualified white counterparts

The GOP can pull of of the political diversity stunts it wants by giving prominence to a select few. By all means those individuals are undoubtedly qualified and shout take advantage of their exposre. However, most people recognize that does not represent real opportunity and is based on the largesse of those who control the party politics - who happen to also control legislative access, judicial access, corporate control and wealth. If the Court strikes down affirmative action, the GOP will find it harder, not easier to grow and survive. With rapidly changing demographics America, it may represent a short term legal win, but will represent long term political doom.

Thank you for your considered, thought provoking comment on a very important subject. I read recently that when an employer is faced with two job applicants, equally educated and qualified, one white with a felony record, and the other black with no criminal record, a majority will hire the felon over the black. We have a long way to go for the American promise of Opportunity for All to be realized, and so Affirmative Action must continue w good while yet. A sad but necessary check.

Republicans gave coveted speaking slots – the kind that can catapult a local official to national notice – to newcomers like Mia Love, a black congressional candidate in Utah, and recently elected minorities such as Marco Rubio, Nikki Haley and Susana Martinez. Love, while undoubtedly an interesting figure, was plucked from an obscure perch as mayor of a newly created development city of just 17,000 people in northern Utah. She has never won a higher office and was advanced, in part, for diversity.

This is nothing new for the GOP.

Another keynote spot went to Condi Rice, who was, as she said in 1997, a “beneficiary” of affirmative action hiring at Stanford."

Minorities see throught the tokenism and perceive the so-called republican affirmative action as nothing more than opportunism for repubs to capitalize of a con and a fake image. Why weren't Martinez or Haley considered for VP if the GOP was so serious?

Blacks recognize that affirmative action is a pathway for ordinary people to do extraordinary things. If it is eliminated, minorities will be left to the charity of whites of position and privilege to determine their success regardless of credentials, abilities or potential.

Most Republicans treat discrimination as if it was a right.

So for them to take action on the subject would mean taking away one of their rights.

We all know where the GOP stands on Affirmative Action..
and we know why they are so strangely silent 30 days before the election.
They just don't want to disturb a political wasp's nest that could motivate those they consider ..the opposition.
