Shailene Woodley may co-star in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Variety reports that Woodley -- a Golden Globe nominee for "The Descendants" -- is in talks to play Mary Jane Watson in the highly anticipated sequel.

The news of Mary Jane's appearance in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" lends credence to the idea that the new "Spider-Man" trilogy will take elements from the controversial Gwen Stacy storyline in "The Amazing Spider-Man No. 121" comic book. Stacy -- played in "The Amazing Spider-Man" by Emma Stone -- is Peter Parker's first love, but their relationship becomes complicated when he meets Mary Jane, one of Stacy's close friends.

"I am a huge fan of the Gwen Stacy saga in the comics," director Marc Webb told HuffPost earlier this year when asked about Gwen's fate. "I think it's one of the more interesting and controversial storylines -- certainly in Spider-Man, and really in all comics. I think one of the reasons that it was interesting to tell Gwen Stacy's story is because of that element. But, of course, you need to establish [a connection between Gwen and Peter Parker]. We'll see how that unfolds."

Webb and "Amazing Spider-Man" star Andrew Garfield recently signed on for the sequel, which is due out in theaters on May 2, 2014.
