Kellogg Mini-Wheats Recall: Millions Of Boxes Possibly Contaminated With Metal Pieces

Breakfast cereal lovers best pay attention: Kellogg's is recalling millions of boxes of Mini-Wheats cereal that may be contaminated with pieces of metal mesh.

The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that recalled boxes of Frosted Mini-Wheats Bite-Size Original and Mini-Wheats Unfrosted Bite Size cereals were sold to stores nationwide. A "faulty manufacturing part" is to blame.

No injuries have yet been reported, and the company is working with retailers to remove the boxes from shelves.

Kellogg's web site, which features information about the recall, invites consumers to call its help hotline if they have questions. The same page, however, is filled with frustrated and confused comments from consumers. One commenter, identified as Kenneth, wrote that he was unable to get in touch with Kellogg's:

So what am I supposed to do with the three boxes of recalled cereal that I have? Your customer service is pretty poor and I can not get in contact with a representative. No one answers your 1-800 line.

In a company statement, Kellogg's said the recall will cost between $20 million and $30 million.

The Wall Street Journal writes that this is the second supply-chain issue in recent years that has resulted in recall for Kellogg's. In 2010, the company recalled cereal that had been improperly packaged, causing odd colors and odors. At the time, Kellogg's spent millions trying to fix the supply chain, and will plunk down another $100 million this year to do the same.

The publication notes that Kellogg's supply chain has "suffered deep cost cuts, leaving several manufacturing facilities overworked and too few people overseeing operations."
