When it comes to awarding its prestigious peace prize, the Norway-based Nobel Committee tends to leave everyone at a loss for words. Remember 2009, when the committee sparked a frenzy after presenting the award to Barack Obama, merely a few months after he was sworn into office.

This year, the committee decided to award the prize to the debt-riddled European Union for what it described as "six decades of advancement of peace, reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe."
