A 13-year-old boy from Manitoba, Canada, bravely walked through a snowstorm to save 24 of his schoolmates stranded on a broken-down school bus.

The bus became stuck in the snow on the side of a rural road near the community of Sandilands during a storm on October 4. Alexi Catellier was among the oldest students on the bus and was left in charge of calming the younger children, including his 5-year-old little brother, according to MSN Now.

The bus was stuck for almost six hours as the snowstorm snapped hydro poles and cut the power lines in the region, making it impossible to call for help.

While the driver tried to free the bus, digging out the snow from around the wheels, Catellier worked hard to pacify the smaller children.

"It was definitely nerve-wracking.. You have to keep the kids calm, because otherwise the bus driver won't be able to do his job," Catellier told CBC News.

The situation, however, continued to worsen. When the students ran out of food and water, Catellier, along with another student, melted snow into water bottles for the kids to drink.

By about 8 p.m., Catellier realized there was no other option but to set out on foot for help.

"The way the wind was blowing, and with the snow, it was freezing cold. And I was just wearing running shoes, track pants, a thin sweater and a little fall jacket," he told CBC News.

He eventually came across a man who was able to notify CN Rail workers in the area.

Catellier went back to the bus and helped carry some of the young children to a nearby home so they could warm up and use the restroom.

The CN Rail workers later came and pulled the bus out of the snow around 9p.m.
