UFC 153 Results: Anderson Silva Stops Stephan Bonnar; Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Wins

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Anderson Silva stopped Stephan Bonnar with a knee to the body with 20 seconds left in the first round Saturday night, winning his 17th consecutive fight in front of his home fans at UFC 153.

Silva (31-4) showed off his usual dominance while stopping Bonnar (17-8) for the first time in the veteran's career. Silva dared Bonnar to take a shot at him in the early minutes before hurting him with a knee and finishing him with punches on the ground.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira also defeated Dave Herman by armbar submission late in the second round at Rio's HSBC Arena, and UFC newcomer Glover Teixeira stopped Fabio Maldonado after two rounds for his 17th straight victory.

Silva has been the UFC's middleweight champion since October 2006, and he defended his title July 7 with a dominant victory in his rematch with Chael Sonnen. But when featherweight champion Jose Aldo and several other fighters dropped off the UFC 153 card because of injuries and schedule changes, Silva volunteered to headline the Rio show on just a few weeks' notice, even moving up 20 pounds to light heavyweight for the third time in his career.

Bonnar was among the biggest underdogs in UFC history, but gamely tried to engage with Silva before getting finished. Bonnar hadn't fought since last November, and unofficially considered himself retired.

Silva's easy move up to 205 pounds prompted many fans to wonder if he was preparing for a shot at light heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones, although Silva has discounted the notion.

While the top three Brazilian fighters on the card all dominated, others didn't do as well. Jon Fitch beat Erick Silva by unanimous decision, and Phil Davis beat Wagner Prado by second-round submission with an anaconda choke.

Nogueira (34-7-1) was impressive in his first fight since his arm was broken by Frank Mir at UFC 140. He dominated Herman (21-5) with Brazilian jiu-jitsu – a discipline that Herman claimed "didn't work" against him before the fight.

Teixeira (19-2) battered Maldonado with punches from a full mount for most of their two rounds, but Maldonado survived to the horn both times until the cageside physician called it off before the third.

After fighting for the WEC and various Brazilian promotions during his career, Teixeira joined the UFC in May with a win over Kyle Kingsbury. Teixeira had hoped to fight Rampage Jackson in Rio, but the former light heavyweight champion dropped off the UFC 153 card with an injury.

MMA is never gonna eclipse boxing( a boxing championchip purse could still pay out fighters in 5 UFC PPV's now) as long as Dana and Zuffa continue their monopoly. They have most of the top tier talent in the sport now but are getting stale because there is no competition and the fighters are being "burned out" because of the crazy PPV schedule. If ppl would support the other companies more, they might be able to compete and attract invesment like the UFC. It isn't up to Dana and Zuffa to open up the sport, it is up to the fans to "force them" by supporting other companies with their dollars because unfortunately( it's all about the money and once Zuffa squeezes all the profit out of the MMA momentum and starts to take losses), they will cut and run, leaving the UFC in the same place it was when they bought it.

Silva is a "Master" MMA fighter. He has mastered his own fighting skill-set and competed against the best inside and outside the UFC. His conditioning and experience make him a favorite no matter who is put in against him. He is simply the best right now "DEAL WITH IT". Ppl just want to see him at a disadvantage in a match. The UFC isn't a "toughman" tournament/competition anymore so "let it go". Weight classes and safety rules were implemented so they could compete with boxing as a legitimate, elite combat sport, and they have started to crush it in popularity. Now all ppl want to see is blood, broken bones and carnage again, "go play Mortal Kombat".

UFC and Dana white blow. These guys who are champs now are nothing like the champs of the past. Colture fought guys 50 to 60 lbs heavier. He would take on present champions from different weight classes. Now it's dancing with the stars. Listening to Joe rogin is horrible. The days of the brawlers was the UFC. Now guys go in that if they would just let themselves go could crush people. But instead they just want to show how much they learned in class. White knows there's guys a over the country who would take his champions down. But they don't fight his style or they won't make him their master. He should change his name to don king.

Yes, when it first started and the Gracie's had it. Now there are far more fighters plus people cried then and even now about the violence. So to make it more exceptable to the whinners they put rules in and more weight classes. It's better today,back then the fighters were not as well train in as they are now either.

When is Anderson going to stop showboating in the cage as if he is not challenged enough and go look for challenges himself? He won't fight #1 contender Weidman nor will he fight Jon Jones.
Now, he wants to fight another smaller/shorter fighter (GSP) with no KO ability who poses no real threat to him, and is practically a cripple coming off a devastating knee injury?

last fight Anderson took the fight on short notice and a heavier weight,all the other fighters were either injuried or contract problems. Why didn't Jon Jones fight Sonnen when Henderson got hurt? Again Anderson stepped up to save the card and Dana White cancelled it.

I will say Silva is an amazing fighter, but beating Bonner is really nothing
to write home about. Even Sonnen, ive seen a few of his fights, he was mostly
pretty bad.
Jones vs silva or St pierre vs Silva would be proper fights.

St Pierre is 25 lbs lighter than Silva I believe I heard him say. That's not a proper fight. Lets see Silva take on the #1 contender for his weight class. I don't want to see him fighting smaller guys. Stefan Bonner is not ever going to beat up Silva. He is like a Forest Griffin proper fighter. Silva would take out Griffin in the first round as well if Griffin hasn't retired already.

With Anderson Silva, it is now prudent to say, size doesn't matter as he continues is winning streak in the UFC against guys much bigger than him. Chael Sonneh, Forrest Griffin, and Bonnar to name a few, can explain this better. If this is true, what can we say the lesson(s) have we learned as UFC fans, and fans of Anderson Silva in the cage? To me, his versatility explains one of the reasons UFC has become very popular, and a reason Dana White has not been able to articulate very well. UFC is not only about show casing brutal fighting, or recruiting vicious and heartless guys from the street who will bloody others and walk away from the cage when the fight is over. UFC is also about self defense against anyone whose size you may not have trained for as a fighter and as a common man, a non fighter who walks in the streets but would have to defend himself/herself when it comes to it against the wrong guys. Anderson Silva enters into the cage with this mindset. He doesn't play the opponent's game but uses his skills and his mind to out-perform his opponent no matter his size. In his Stephan Bonnar's fight, he yet again introduced another trick, perhaps from Mohammeh Ali's play book - the robby-dobe. On Silva's own ground, the hotbed of mixed martial arts, Brazil, he once again made his countrymen proud.

Jones has one hell of a reach. I have yet to be as impressed by Jones as most people. When you have 8-12 inches reach on everyone you fight, it makes your life 10x easier.

Have you ever seen a guy take a punch to the liver? Quite possibly the most devastating punch in fighting. It sends a shockwave throughout the nervous system and incapacitates the fighter while still conscious. The liver shot ends fights. Period.

UFC is making a huge mistake by telling refs to bring competitors to their feet way way to soon. War as is a true battle of the stongest man is offten a war of attrition. If they make this war into boxing or kickboxing we have already seeen that. That is simply fast hands or fast feet but not a war of all out strength. Let these men grapple on the ground...weight and the power to control takes time and may be boring but the air that is in the fighter underneath must be sucked out of them. Also smart grapplers underneath can and must find ingenious ways to get out or win while underneath. Wrestling is the true nature of this type of combat but wrstlers are often forced to do too much foot training because they know they will not be given the time nescessary to do the job if on top.

I was watching ultimate fighter tonight and a wrester in round two was working his ass off to hold a striker flat on his back. He was sucking the air and life out of the other guy. Yet the ref kept yelling to the top wrestler to work. The guy on the bottom was squirming but every time he could the wrestler would throw an elbow. Yet the ref kept yelling "work". If that is not work I don't know what work is. When the ref stood them up, the ref said to the wrestler, "when you are on top you have to be throwing big shots to take him out"...that is so stupid and unfare to wrestlers. It is very hard to constrict the air out of someone plus throw big shots. Constricting the air is a big shot...if you have ever had the air consticted out of you. This is further proof that their is an anti-wrestler bias in the UFC and therefore with UFC refs... it is actually more difficult to maintain steady control of a man than that to fight from your feet which is "less work". So when a ref says "work" that really means in UFC talk, "let's stand up to start dancing and boxing again...the ref really should be saying "ratings say fans like boxing better than wrestling so I'm going to have to stand you guys up"
