The story of Susan Verstegen came to a tragic end after only 38 years back in 1994. "Unusual Suspects" revealed the details of her murder at the hands of a man who continued to proclaim his innocence while on death row. But DNA evidence and an earlier confession painted a very different story.
Verstegen was at first thought missing, but her body was eventually found, half-dressed and stuffed inside a barrel near a church. The case went cold for eight years, until a DNA link was found thanks an earlier conviction. Rodrigo Hernandez had to give a DNA sample as a condition of his parole, and his DNA linked him to the death of Verstegen.
Her son, Chuck Monney, was fifteen-years-old when his mother was murdered. He thinks about her often. "What hurts me the most is thinking about my kids," he said. "That she would have had a great relationship with them; that she would have adored them."
Rodrigo Hernandez was executed by lethal injection on January 27, 2012.
New episodes of "Unusual Suspects" air Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on ID.
