Charles Duoto Shot, In Critical Condition After Altercation At The Outpost Apartments Near USTA

Armed Robbery Leaves Student In Critical Condition, Neighbors Demand Security

Charles Duoto, a 20-year-old University of Texas at San Antonio student, was shot early Tuesday morning in the latest violent incident at a troubled apartment complex near campus.

Police told the San Antonio Express that a man walked up to Duoto at The Outpost apartments and ordered him to empty his pockets. The two men began fighting and Duoto was shot.

Duoto's roommate, Vits Vochyn, told local television station KSAT that he found Duoto bleeding on the living room floor of their apartment. Duoto was taken to University Hospital, where he's listed in critical condition.

According to KSAT, the shooting is the latest of 300 police calls to The Outpost in the last year, including a pistol whipping, robberies and several rape allegations. In July, police were involved in a standoff with two suspects allegedly armed with an AK-47 who successfully fled the scene.

The Outpost complex is located across the street from the university campus on USTA Boulevard. Management has not responded to calls from the media.

While the furnished apartments feature a common outdoor pool, free tanning, billiards tables and a fitness center among other amenities, residents are calling for more security. Nick Turner, another resident and student at UTSA, told KENS 5, "My teachers and students ridicule me and say I have to wear a bulletproof vest."
