David Morrissey On 'The Walking Dead' And Avoiding Comics

David Morrissey Avoided Popular 'Walking Dead' Comics

David Morrissey is headed to "The Walking Dead" as the Governor this season. And while his character is one of the most highly anticipated for Season 3 -- don't forget about Michonne! -- Morrissey said he didn't do much research ... at least comic book-wise.

Adapted for TV in 2010, "The Walking Dead" is based on the award-winning black and white comic books by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard.

"I avoided the comics for a bit actually," Morrissey told Digital Spy. "I obviously saw the look of the Governor from the comic, but the first script came in and I liked what they were doing. Then I read the comic and it was very different, the thing about the Governor in the comic is that he's a fully-formed person and what we do with him in the TV series is ... he's not as fully formed when he arrives and then we work on him from then on."

Boasting two new characters, showrunner Glen Mazzara is excited to see what the "Walking Dead" additions will do for the series.

"We're going to introduce the Governor, we've introduced Michonne [Danai Gurira]," Mazzara told HuffPost TV. "I just wanted a bigger scope. I just wanted to feel that the whole world had gone to hell and our characters were trapped in it."

"The Walking Dead" airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
