Thieves Steal Van With Sealed Coffins Inside

Polish car thieves made away with 12 sealed coffins when they stole a van in Germany.

Polish police said the coffins were found early Tuesday in the woods near the western Polish city of Konin. The thieves apparently dumped the coffins after they unwittingly stole a van in Germany that was on its way to a crematorium.

The coffins were in one of three vans stolen on the night of Oct. 14 in the Berlin suburb of Hoppegarten.

According to Polish newspaper Wiadomosci, the coffins were found "closed and undamaged." Police say the coffins have been transported to the Department of Forensic Medicine in Poznan, Poland.

Three Poles have already been detained in connection with the theft, but two other men -- Maks Skibicki and Tomasz Sporny -- thought to have been involved in the crime are still at large, Polish news website Eponan.pl reports.
