Restore Our Future, the super PAC supporting Mitt Romney, launched new ad buys in Minnesota and New Mexico on Wednesday in Republicans' latest effort to create the impression that the race is closer than it is in Democratic-leaning states.
The super PAC will run two of its existing ads: "New Normal," which focuses on how President Barack Obama's economic policies have affected the middle class, and "Saved," a spot originally aired during the GOP primaries that highlights Romney's compassionate side, telling the story of how he joined efforts to find his business partner's missing teenage daughter in New York City.
The ad runs will cost Restore Our Future $1.1 million in Minnesota and $700,000 in New Mexico. With no shortage of cash on hand for the final week of the campaign, the super PAC's tactic is clear: Throw extra money into blue states under the pretense of advancing Romney's momentum, thereby pressuring Democrats to match that spending as they did in Michigan and Pennsylvania.
"The Romney momentum is growing and the electoral field keeps expanding," said Charlie Spies, treasurer of Restore Our Future, in a statement. "The Obama campaign has been forced to advertise in Pennsylvania and Michigan, and Bill Clinton, the top Obama surrogate, has been sent to campaign in Minnesota. Now polls show a tightening race in New Mexico. Minnesota and New Mexico understand the choice before America on Tuesday and Mitt Romney's clear vision to balance the budget, empower small businesses and protect individual freedoms is resonating."
But contrary to Spies' comments, the race is tightening in neither Minnesota nor New Mexico. The HuffPost Pollster tracking model, based on all available public polls, shows the president leading Romney 50.6 percent to 43.7 percent in Minnesota and 51.2 percent to 43 percent in New Mexico.
