A Washington State woman could face child endangerment charges after police found her two young sons abandoned on the side of a highway across state lines.
A construction manager working on a stretch of I-90 in Idaho found the boys, ages 3 and 6, near the highway at approximately 9:10 a.m. Tuesday morning, KREM reports.
Less the 12 hours later, police in Washington arrested Shannon Marie Germanton, 27, at her home in Spokane Valley.
The boys, found without shoes, told authorities that their mother needed gas for the car and went looking for help, according to the Associated Press.
On Monday night, employees at a Walmart in Washington spotted Germanton in the bathroom with her kids and a gas canister, "acting suspicious," KXLY reports. The store employees contacted police, but medics on the scene cleared Germanton and let her go.
Police are still piecing together their investigation. It is possible that Germanton abandoned the boys very early Tuesday morning, shortly before being spotted at a nearby Exxon station.
Following a medical examination, Germanton's children were placed in foster care with the Department of Health and Welfare Child Protective Services, according to KHQ.
