Shocking news from Variety: Jamie Foxx is negotiating to star as the villain in the upcoming sequel to "The Amazing Spider-Man." The Oscar-winning actor would play Electro, a man who gets his super powers from a lightning strike.

As Variety noted, Sony -- the studio behind "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" -- had no comment on the rumor, but Foxx kind of did. In a tweet posted just after the Variety news dropped, the actor commented that he dressed up as Electro for Halloween.

Electro first appeared in a 1964 Spider-Man comic. His inclusion in the new Spider-Man universe was alluded to at the end of "The Amazing Spider-Man"; a post-credits sequence featured a shadowy figure ominously chatting with Dr. Curt Connors (The Lizard) while lightning flashed in the background, causing some fans to speculate that Electro was the next obstacle for Peter Parker. (Whether that shadowy figure was supposed to be Electro was left intentionally unclear.)

If Foxx signs on, he would be just the latest talented star to board "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." In addition to returning leads Andrew Garfield (as Spider-Man) and Emma Stone (as Gwen Stacy), Shailene Woodley is also up for the role of Mary Jane Watson in the film. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" will also include Harry Osborn, but that role has not been cast.

For more on Foxx and what direction "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" could go, head over to Variety. Directed, like the first film, by Marc Webb, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is due out in theaters in 2014.
