On 1st and goal just four yards away from the end zone, Virginia completely faked out the N.C. State defense with a perfectly executed trick play that looked like an easy touchdown... until the very end.
Quarterback Phillip Sims pitched the ball to Perry Jones who started running to the right side. As the Wolfpack's D followed Jones, Sims rolled to the other side and was left wide open in the end zone. Jones lofted a pass to Sims but he dropped the ball.
Sims immediately put his hands on his helmet and fell to his knees in disbelief that he dropped a touchdown. But fortunately for Sims, it wouldn't matter as he punched it in from the 1-yard line two plays later to put Virginia up 7-0. The Cavaliers would go on to win easily 33-6 for their third victory of the season.
