SIDS Prevention: Why Can't We Stop Sudden Infant Deaths? (VIDEO)

Over two thousand infants in America die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome each year. Despite efforts to educate parents, this number remains stagnant and continues to be the leading cause of death in infants under twelve months.

Meredith Agius, a peer supporter at the Canadian Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths, lost a child to SIDS. On a HuffPost Live segment, she shared some of the issues parents go through when losing a child to SIDS.

"A lot has been done to educate on things like sleep position," she said of the efforts to teach parents about SIDS. But when seeking specific answers, many are left frustrated.

"As human beings, we are hardwired to want the specific answers to why something happened. And I think that's still the major thing a lot of parents struggle with -- even though they've done everything within their power, it's still happening, and it's still devastating."

Joining Agius to discuss education concerning SIDS were host Nancy Redd, Rev. John Long, Minister of the Tubman-King Community Church in Daytona Beach, FL, and Dr. Michael Bruce, a sleep expert in Scottsdale, AZ.
