Dan Rather cautioned people against prematurely calling the election for President Obama on Tuesday, saying that he suspected Romney was going to have a "good day."

He appeared on "Morning Joe," where he contributed to the show's Election Day coverage. Host Joe Scarborough recalled Rather's coverage of the 2000 race between George W. Bush and Al Gore. Scarborough also noted the 2004 election, saying, "Those two races certainly should give us all pause before walking into tonight's coverage thinking we know who's gonna win."

Rather agreed. He said that recent media coverage is already suggesting that Obama will win, but stressed that it's voters — and not the media's "spin, chatter and analysis"— who will determine the outcome of the election.

"I'll be honest with you, as I always try to be," Rather added. "Something in my gut tells me that it's gonna be a good day for Romney."

He explained, "If Obama gets his vote out, I agree he probably wins, but there's some doubt in my mind that he's gonna get his vote totally out. And Romney's vote will get out partly because it's older people and his people are well motivated. Many detest the president."
