Though it lacks a killer soundtrack and isn't as high-definition as you might expect, this NASA simulation of a disk galaxy's birth and development is incredible to watch.
In the simulation, which assumes the universe is dominated by dark energy and dark matter, different colors indicate old (red) and young (white and blue) stars, as well as the distribution of gas (pale blue).
The simulation depicts a region about 300,000 light years across, and condenses action that unfolded over 13.5 billion years—from shortly after the Big Bang to the present. It was run on the Pleiades supercomputer at NASA's Ames Research Center, and it required about one million CPU hours, according to the video's YouTube description.
