Home Owner Arrested After Shooting Burglars

A man who shot two intruders breaking into his home was the one who ended up in handcuffs.

Jerry Rasmussen, 60, of Fair Oaks, Calif. was arrested because, cops said, he is an ex-con who's not allowed to possess firearms, according to Fox40. He was also charged with possessing prohibited ammunition.

Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesman Jason Ramos told News10 that Rasmussen heard a burglar in his home around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Rasmussen shot the prowler who escaped and was found later at a hospital.

Rasmussen then found and shot a second burglar in the doorway of one of his bedrooms, Ramos said

The Sacramento Bee reports that Rasmussen ran from his house, leaving the fatally wounded man inside. Law enforcement personnel discovered that the gunshot killed the intruder, who was said to be in his 30s.

Rasmussen was charged with suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition. Media reports didn't indicate what crime Rasmussen had previously committed.

The suspected burglar who fled to a hospital is expected to survive, according to the Sacramento Bee. Authorities have not revealed the identities of the men that Rasmussen shot.
