'Top Gun 2' Reportedly Not Happening In Wake Of Tony Scott's Death

No Take-Off Planned For 'Top Gun 2'

Paramount may have had a need for more speed, but according to the New York Times, the studio's plans for "Top Gun 2" have been set aside in the wake of Tony Scott's suicide. Per the paper, "the sequel has fallen apart."

Before his death in August, Scott was scouting locations for "Top Gun 2" with original star Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Paramount was hoping to release the film in 2014.

"I said to Tony [Scott, 'Top Gun's' director] I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since 'Days of Thunder,'" Cruise told MTV last year. "Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow, that would be ... what we could do now.'"

"X-Men: First Class" writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were negotiating to write the script for "Top Gun 2," but that didn't pan out; Peter Craig -- who co-wrote "The Town" -- was later hired to complete the project.
