Diane von Furstenberg Wrap Dress Inspired By Designer's Divorce

Any fashion-forward woman likely has at least one Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress in her closet. But what these fashionistas may not know is that the iconic frock was actually inspired by the designer's divorce.

Instead of asking for alimony from her ex-husband, German Prince Egon von Furstenberg, after their 1972 divorce, she decided to make it on her own and introduced her now-legendary signature wrap dress instead.

"Usually the fairy tale ends with the girl marrying the prince," von Furstenberg recently told W Magazine. "But mine started as soon as the marriage was over."

Von Furstenberg "exploded" onto the scene after her divorce, selling as many as 25,000 dresses per week.

The designer married Prince von Furstenberg in 1969, but they split three-and-a-half years later in 1972. She got remarried in 2001 to entertainment mogul Barry Diller.
