DETROIT -- Madonna found herself Thursday night hit with another round of fan flak.
In her first concert since the presidential election, loud boos mixed with cheering across Joe Louis Arena as she waxed enthusiastic about President Barack Obama, describing herself as "ecstatically happy" about Tuesday's result.
It was reminiscent of the scene in New Orleans a week before the election, when she was met with jeers after encouraging fans to vote for the president.
This time she acknowledged the negative reaction.
"You can boo all you want," she told the Detroit crowd, "but I've been to countries around the world where people can't vote for their leaders."
Turning to a backup dancer, she cracked: "In the Basque language, 'boo' means 'I love you.'"
Booing continued as Madonna tried to relay a moment from Obama's acceptance speech.
"What's so great about the United States of America is we are a democracy," she said. "We get to vote who will be our leader."
The segment came about midway through a show that had started at 10:45 p.m. -- Madonna's first hometown show since a Ford Field concert in 2008.
The Bay City, Mich.-born star quickly got the crowd back on her side, rhapsodizing about Detroit.
"This place made me who I am -- a hardworking girl," she said. "Detroit is having a comeback -- I can feel it in my bones. We're coming back ... so watch out."
