"Breaking Dawn Part 2" is the young adult event of the year, yet it was almost given a rating that would have kept its core audience away from the theater. According to the Los Angeles Times, "Breaking Dawn Part 2" initially received an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America because of some extreme violence: beheadings.
"Certainly, with any other movie, there are a thousand ways to kill people," director Bill Condon told the Times. "With this one, it’s a variation on the same theme. If they were going to be offended by the idea of beheadings, we would have had no movie."
Condon said some concessions were made, allowing "Breaking Dawn Part 2" to arrive in theaters with a more audience-friendly PG-13 certification.
As "Twilight" fans know, this isn't the first time the franchise has flirted with an adults-only rating; it isn't even the first time "Breaking Dawn" has flirted with an adults-only rating. Last year, it was revealed that "Breaking Dawn Part 1" almost earned a dreaded R-rating because of its sex scene.
"We [originally] got rated R," star Kristen Stewart told U.K.'s version of Glamour magazine. "They re-cut [the scene]."
