The moment was captured by the Big Ten Network's cameras during Indiana's 99-45 win over Sam Houston and was subsequently featured on Sportscenter's "Not Top 10."
Fans on social media were quick to poke fun at Crean for his frugal ways.
Tom Crean dropping his gum on the floor, picking it up and eating it, just made me laugh so hard. 😂😂— Kasandra Rieckers (@kasandra_jo) November 16, 2012

...tom crean exercised the 5 second rule on a nationally televised event #trill...— ...life good... (@cuzzin_queens) November 16, 2012
In his defense, Crean invoked the five-second rule and pointed out that the gum was dry. He added, however, that even if it weren't, the cleanliness of his home court would put to ease any fears of germs.
The gum I dropped tonight was a fresh piece of Dentyne Ice. No 5 second rule was in effect.— Tom Crean (@TomCrean) November 16, 2012
Now, even if it was used, it wouldn't matter. Branch McCracken Court at ASSEMBLY HALL is the cleanest and greatest court around.— Tom Crean (@TomCrean) November 16, 2012
Someone might want to tell Crean about a recent study that found that germs coudn't care less about the five-second rule.
