An unbelievable ad is from the late 19th century | Sardonic Catholic Dad

Have a sore throat? Perhaps a cocaine drop will help.

Though it may seem bizarre now, the cocaine drop was offered as a cure in late 19th and early 20th century ads, complete with doctors helping to push the product. And if it wasn't cocaine, it was chocolate and soda, both also advertised as good for you around the turn of the century.

Three main lessons here: (1) people have been obsessed with "health" for a long time; (2) Americans are always looking for new ways to get energy; and (3) people really had a misguided understanding of nutrition before the food pyramid rolled around.
