Calexico Christmas Song Premiere: 'Green Grows The Holly' From 'Holidays Rule' Compilation Album

Calexico Premieres Their Very Merry Single

'Tis the season for your favorite indie bands to cover your favorite holiday songs. "Holidays Rule," a new album on Hear Music/Concord Music Group, features one of our favorite bands: Calexico. The Arizona-bred group covers a very merry tune you might remember from elementary school sing-a-longs: "Green Grows the Holly."

Calexico gives the old English carol an acoustic update, adding just enough of their Tex-Mex drawl to make the song sound more mariachi than medieval. Think the Shins meets Lambchop with a dash of traditional winter cheer, and you've got a catchy tune that satisfies those of the flannel shirt wearing variety as well as the devoted seasonal sweater folks.

Other highlights from the 17-song "Holidays Rule" album: Rufus Wainwright and Sharon van Etten sing "Baby it's Cold Outside," the Punch Brothers sing "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," and Andrew Bird sings "Auld Lang Syne." Plus, Sir Paul McCartney covers "The Christmas Song," so you can get your Beatles' fix. Listen to a preview of the album here, and check out the entire "Green Grows the Holly" song in the player above.

The record was officially released on October 30th by Hear Music/Concord Music Group and is availablehere.
