A 15-year-old girl was gunned down Monday evening while standing with friends in a back yard on Chicago's Southwest Side.
Porshe Foster was standing with a group of other teenagers behind a home in the 6900 block of South Campbell Avenue in the city's Lithuanian Plaza neighborhood when a man approached the group and opened fire, striking Foster in the back, just before 9:30 p.m., ABC Chicago reports.
Foster was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center but died within the hour, according to Fox Chicago.
Police told the Chicago Tribune the shooting was apparently gang-related, but that Foster was likely not its intended target.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Foster was a sophomore at ACE Tech Charter High School and was interested in architecture.
Porshe was the youngest of her mother Bonita Foster's six daughters, according to the Tribune.
"This thing has to be stopped," Bonita Foster told the paper. "It’s foolishness."
No one is in custody in the shooting as of Tuesday morning.
The shooting comes one day after two people were shot, one fatally and the other critically, outside the funeral for an alleged gang member on the city's South Side. Sherman Miller, 21, was killed in the incident. The previous holiday weekend, four men were fatally shot, one fatally stabbed and at least 20 people wounded in shootings in Chicago.
Earlier Monday, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said in a press conference that although the city's homicide rate is still higher than last year overall, the number have murders since May 1 have actually decreased.
"I can't change what happened in the first quarter," McCarthy said Monday, according to NBC Chicago. "What I can do is fix it moving forward."
