Note: This holiday season, in lieu of a traditional holiday gift guide, we'll be featuring a different LGBT organization each day for our "30 Days Of LGBT Giving." Check back tomorrow for a look at another incredible group that's working tirelessly on behalf of the LGBT community.
New Alternatives is an organization that works with New York City's homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. The group differentiates itself by providing services to mainly 18- to 24-year-olds who are deemed "too mentally ill," "too trans" or "too different," by other similar organizations.
Every Sunday, New Alternatives, which is located in Greenwich Village, hosts a weekly dinner prepared by volunteers followed by life skills sessions where topics such as suicide and HIV/AIDS prevention are discussed. In addition to these weekly gatherings, the group operates a food pantry and distributes donated clothing as well.
This holiday season, like every Thanksgiving and Christmas, New Alternatives will hold a traditional gathering on the actual holidays for homeless LGBT youth who have no where else to go.
