'Skyfall' In The U.K.: Sam Mendes' Bond Film Is The Biggest Movie Box Office Hit Of All Time

A big win for Bond: "Skyfall" is now the United Kingdom's biggest movie ever.

The film has grossed an impressive $869 million worldwide, raking in $151 million in the U.K. alone. As THR notes, the latter figure is enough to beat "Avatar," which previously held the title.

"Skyfall" has dialed up $246 million at the domestic box office amid glowing reviews. Critics praised Daniel Craig's performance and Sam Mendes' brooding take on the movie, though HuffPost's own Christopher Rosen wondered if the series was veering a little too close to the dark style of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.

"I wanted it to have its own distinctive tone," Mendes told The Huffington Post in advance of the movie's release. "I wanted to have a combination of the things that you expect from a Bond movie, but I wanted it to carry more weight. I wanted to go further back into his past. I wanted to learn more about him. And I wanted to reintroduce the great, kind of flamboyant villain again."

The film cost $200 million to make.
