Antonio Villaraigosa On Marijuana Legalization In California: 'I'm Not There Yet' (VIDEO)

Mayor On Pot Legalization: 'I'm Not There Yet'

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told HuffPost Live's Jacob Soboroff during an in-studio interview Thursday that he does not support the full legalization of marijuana in California. The comments came on the same day marijuana became legal for recreational use in Washington, following the passage of a ballot measure in that state in November.

Washington state and Colorado were the first states to legalize and regulate the possession of marijuana. Colorado's law does not take effect until Jan. 5 of next year. Both states' laws require pot growers and retail stores to be licensed with the state.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, has struggled with California's medical marijuana legalization, with the city council voting to ban dispensaries earlier this year, only to have that motion suspended after medical marijuana supporters gathered 50,000 signatures to force a referendum on the ban.
