WASHINGTON -- This video may not look like much at first. It starts out as a series of dots moving across the screen in random directions. Then, the picture becomes more clear. You'll end up seeing the familiar colors and routes of D.C.'s Metrorail system -- except that it's moving.
Some eagle-eyed viewers might even pick out particular Metrobus routes as transit vehicles move across the city.
This is the creation of software developer Andrew Walker of Vancouver, who has created similar visualizations for other cities using publicly available transit data.
A previous version for D.C. released a few weeks ago didn't set the trains apart from the buses all that well. Now that's changed.
As Washington City Paper reports: "It highlights the trains over the buses, because obviously they carry a lot more people," Walker says. "So it's only right that they get a lot more emphasis in the video."
