Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus addressed some of the Republican Party's election problems, including the "dumb" remarks made by some prominent 2012 candidates.
"I think we're pretty clear on some of the dumb things that were said over the last cycle," Priebus said in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.
Several Republicans' remarks received major criticism in the months leading up to Election Day 2012, including Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), who claimed victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant.
"From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," said Akin said of pregnancy caused by rape. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist."
Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's campaign also suffered from remarks about rape, when he said he believed pregnancy from rape was "something God intended to happen." Mourdock blamed the "liberal media" for his election loss in a recent email to supporters.
Priebus recently said the Republican Party would undergo a "full autopsy" after tough losses in the 2012 elections.
"I don't think you can draw any quick conclusions other than the fact that we lost and we know that," Priebus said. "But in order to get back in the game, you've got to look at and do a full autopsy of what happened."
