The SAG nominations have been announced, and the 2013 roster of nominees includes the casts of "Argo," "Lincoln" and Silver Linings Playbook."
The Screen Actors Guild awards are handed out to the best actors and ensembles in film. "Silver Linings Playbook," "Argo" and "Lincoln" were joined in the Best Ensemble category by "Les Miserables" and "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." Presumed contenders like "Zero Dark Thirty," "Django Unchained," "Flight" and "Moonrise Kingdom" were left out. According to Awards Daily blogger Sasha Stone, screeners for "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Django Unchained" didn't arrive in time for SAG voters.
For Best Actor, SAG singled out Oscar favorites Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln"), Denzel Washington ("Flight"), John Hawkes ("The Sessions"), Hugh Jackman ("Les Miserables") and Bradley Cooper ("Silver Linings Playbook"). Joaquin Phoenix, who many felt gave one of the best performances of the year in "The Master" was snubbed, putting his awards season future in some amount of jeopardy.
Best Actress nominees included Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Helen Mirren ("Hitchcock"), Marion Cotillard ("Rust & Bone") and Naomi Watts ("The Impossible"). Quvenzhane Wallis, the child star of "Beasts of the Southern Wild," wasn't eligible for a nomination as that film was made out of SAG union requirements.
In the supporting categories, Tommy Lee Jones ("Lincoln"), Alan Arkin ("Argo"), Robert De Niro ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Master") and Javier Bardem ("Skyfall") were selected as Best Supporting Actor candidates, above contenders like the "Django Unchained" trio of Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson, plus fan favorite Matthew McConaughey. Anne Hathaway ("Les Miserables"), Sally Field ("Lincoln"), Helen Hunt ("The Sessions"), Maggie Smith ("The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel") and Nicole Kidman ("The Paperboy") grabbed Supporting Actress nods.
"The Amazing Spider-Man," "The Bourne Legacy," "The Dark Knight Rises," "Les Miserables" and "Skyfall" were honored for Best Stunt Ensemble.
At the 2012 SAG Awards, Jean Dujardin, Viola Davis, Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer won; all but Davis went on to win Academy Awards (she lost to Meryl Streep). "The Help" was awarded Best Ensemble performance by SAG.
The 19th annual Screen Actors Guild awards air on Jan. 27, 2013 on TNT and TBS.
CORRECTION: A previous version of this post stated that Octavia Spencer lost to Meryl Streep at the 2012 Academy Awards.
