NBC Orders 3 More Episodes Of 'Whitney,' Bringing Season Total To 16

NBC has ordered three additional episodes of sophomore drama "Whitney," according to Deadline.

While the show's second season was initially given a modest 13-episode pickup, the Whitney Cummings comedy scored ratings gains with its fifth episode this week, earning a 1.4 in the adults 18-49 demo and matching its season high -- demonstrating two consecutive weeks of improvement and proving its stability, if not ratings dominance.

"Whitney" and the critically-adored but ratings-challenged "Community" were originally set to premiere on Friday, Oct. 19 (considered a "death slot" by many), but NBC changed course and instead replaced "Animal Practice" with "Whitney" on Wednesdays starting Nov. 14. That strategy seems to have paid off, with "Whitney" holding its own in the ratings (by NBC standards) alongside "Guys With Kids."

"Community" also escaped its Friday sentence, and will return to its 8 p.m. Thursday timeslot beginning Feb. 7.

"Whitney" airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
