Converting runway dresses into wearable looks can be tricky sometimes (see: Kristen Stewart's sheer Erdem contraption). So the first time we saw a particular outfit from Valentino's Fall 2012 show, we were left puzzled and decided that we had bigger fish to fry. Now, we're faced with the exact same dress again -- and we're determined to make some headway.
Last night, Carey Mulligan attended the ASMALLWORLD Gala Dinner for the Alzheimer Society in Switzerland in the gray, armor dress that had us cocking our heads when Keira Knightley wore it on Jimmy Fallon's show back in June. Both ladies opted for updos and khol-lined eyes (just like the runway model!), but switched it up in the shoe department.
So did "The Great Gatsby" star pull it off? First off, it's very difficult for Carey to wear something that we don't like. That said, we think Keira's simple black pumps might have been better suited for the complex dress. The split, long sleeves, high neckline and thick, gauzy fabric could have easily made this ensemble matronly, but we're pretty sure 27-year-old Mulligan was able to beat the odds on those factors.
And since we decided that this needs to be settled once and for all: what do you think of the Valentino dress?
