There are nearly as many guns in the U.S. as there are people, and that is no accident.

The gun industry is under the spotlight after Adam Lanza, 20, killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., with a military-style rifle on Friday, as well as his mother and himself. Twenty of his victims were students that were 6 or 7 years old. It was the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

Gun lobbyists have fought to prevent stricter gun control laws, and the industry is thriving. Gun sales reached a record high this year, according to FBI data.
