Frustrated fans of "How I Met Your Mother" who are waiting for Ted to meet the mom of his future kids, series co-creator and executive producer Carter Bays has a message for you.
"I know people are impatient and we appreciated the impatience," Bays told TV Guide. "I would contend that most people who watch the show watch it this way. We're not trying to jerk anyone around, but if the series has a point, it's not about the destination, but the journey. It's about these five friends. We're not making 'Mad About You.' It's not 'How I Romanced Your Mother,' which would be a great show and there have been great iterations of that, but that's not the show we're doing. I appreciate people's frustrations and would maybe ask them to forget the show's title. If we had called it 'Ted and His Buddies' or something, maybe there'd be fewer complaints."
There's still no word on whether Season 8 will be the last for "How I Met Your Mother." Despite some public negotiations, CBS has made it clear they want a Season 9 of the comedy, but there is rumored hold out amongst some of the actors. According to Deadline.com, Jason Segel does not want to return after the current season, but the decision isn't set in stone.
In September, Bays and co-creator Craig Thomas said they were writing Season 8 as if it was the last season. However, CBS president Nina Tassler told members of the press the network was optimistic about Season 9.
"Certainly [creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays] have a very strategic wrap-up to the show [whenever it does end]," she said. "They know we want the show to come back next year. We're not there in terms of resolving the season. We're in early conversations and we're pretty optimistic."
Bays told TV Guide the producers would be happy if the show ended with Season 8 or Season 9. "We hope it works out for 9 because we love working here and we love this job and we do feel like we have some great stories to tell in Season 9," Bays said. "But if this is the last season, we'd be able to say it was a well-told story."
