From Race To Ethnicity: Census Rethinks Hispanic On Questionnaire

USA Today:

Hispanics may become a race of their own in the U.S. Census — a major change that some Latino advocacy groups are opposing.

Currently, the Census considers Hispanic not a race but an ethnic background. Hispanics can be of any race, and Hispanic origin is asked on Census forms in a question separate from the one about race.

The definition of Hispanic is those from Spain or Portugal or those spanish speaking persons. Thus how do you classify a black from Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic who speak spanish. In my opinion there is only one race, the human race as all DNA is equal and even the differences in traits are not equal among each race. If you must label by race, there are only 5 races: Asia, Black, white, indian (descended probably from asian) and Polynesian. This is the standard that the world has agreed upon. Are we Americans again going against the world and coming up with our own rules. This whole idea is just stupid and laughable.

basically infers that having races perpetuates racism which is true. If you didn't classify, you would eliminate racism. All persons are created equal.........................

I think Hispanic/Latino should definitely be a race because it is a race. Currently we have to choose between white, black, Asian, or "other." Since the time of Hernan Cortez almost 500 years ago, Native Americans, Africans, and Spanish/European have been having children together, making what we know as Latinos. By our very nature we are a mix of all three things, so we shouldn't have to choose between white or black because it's not as simple as that. It's also messed up because by forcing us to choose either white or black and it basically wipes the indigenous people off the map and does not recognize that most of us have indigenous or Native American ancestry.

When ever I've filled out an application for employment I always leave the race part blank. I think it's pointless. Why do employers have to know what my race/ethnicity for?
