As part of the ongoing "We Do" campaign sponsored by the Campaign for Southern Equality, five same-sex couples applied for marriage licenses in Georgia on Jan. 7, knowing they would be rejected.

The campaign -- which aims to bring Southern states into the national conversation about marriage equality -- kicked off earlier this month in Hattiesburg, Miss., where five couples were also denied marriage licenses.

"We're standing up for ourselves and this is how we're going to do it," one participant said. "This is how we feel we have to bring awareness to the issue."

He also noted, "If Rosa Parks had just kept sitting on the back of the bus..."
