Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) met with his ex-wife Jenny before launching a new political campaign, living up to his promise that he would never run against her for office.

The state's former first lady was shortlisted for an open seat in the Senate by current Gov. Nikki Haley (R). When Haley filled the Senate seat with former-Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), it left an empty seat in the House, and both Sanford and his ex-wife were seen as potential candidates to fill the position.

"I told her if she had an interest in doing this that I’m out, because there’d be nothing crazier than a husband and a wife running against each other,” Sanford said, according to The Hill.

Sanford confirmed Wednesday that he would run to regain his seat in Congress, which he previously held from 1995 to 2001.

The conservative Republican -- once a poster child for the GOP with presidential aspirations -- was caught in a media frenzy when he stepped down as governor in 2009 after admitting to having an extramarital affair with an Argentine woman, Maria Belen Chapur. It was announced in August that he and Chapur are now engaged.

Jenny Sanford has been long rumored as a candidate for political office. The heiress and former investment banker announced this week that she would not be running for office in the upcoming elections.
