Considered one of the best rock musicians of all time, Janis Joplin has been the subject of countless movies, books and songs since her death on Oct. 4, 1970.

Despite her tragically short-lived career -- she died at 27 -- Joplin influenced music greats such as Florence Welch of Florence and The Machine and Stevie Nicks, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Joplin, born in Port Arthur, Texas, on January 19, 1943, would have turned 70 today. We take a look back at her legacy through photos:
