Obama On 'Check, Please!' President, Then State Senator, Talks Dixie Kitchen In 2001 (VIDEO)

Just as they had four years earlier in honor of Barack Obama's first inauguration, WTTW on Friday re-aired the 2001 appearance of the president, then an Illinois state senator, on one of its first "Check, Please!" episodes.

In August 2001, Obama appeared in a segment featuring the Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop in Hyde Park. According to WTTW, it was the fifth show they ever taped and the episode was actually shelved. Its 2009 broadcast on the eve of the president's inauguration was the episode's inaugural airing.

On the episode, a young Obama said he particularly enjoyed the Dixie's johnnycakes -- which he got ahead of his entree, the Southern sampler he ordered because he "couldn't make up my mind" -- as well as the peach cobbler. Obama, then 40, further lauded the chain because its "prices are right and the portions are good."

Since WTTW re-aired the episode in 2009, the Dixie Kitchen in Hyde Park has closed, though the small Cajun-and-Creole-centric chain continues to operate two other locations in Evanston and Lansing, Ill.
