Chicago police on Tuesday morning, the coldest the city has seen in two years, worked for about three hours to rescue a dog who had somehow managed to trap himself on the frozen-over Jackson Park Harbor.

Around 9 a.m., the dog was seen on the ice of Lake Michigan near the 6700 block of South Lake Shore Drive, NBC Chicago reports. Authorities were contacted and a Marine Unit diver attempting to coax the dog to safety arrived on the scene around 10 a.m.

The dog was eventually sedated around 10:30 a.m. when rescue workers were then able to move the dog back to land, according to Fox Chicago.

What was it that attracted the dog to the ice? According to the Tribune, the 1-year-old Shepherd Mix had his eye on a Canada goose.

The dog did not have a microchip or any tags or collars and was taken to Chicago Animal Care and Control. CBS Chicago has a series of photos, courtesy of the ACC, of the pup, who is now recovering from its sedation, but did not sustain any injuries.
