The "cake vs. pie" debate can rage the rest of the year, but on January 23, the lust for crust reigns supreme.

The council says, according to a 2008 Crisco survey, nearly one out of five (19 percent) of Americans prefer apple pie, followed next by pumpkin pie (13 percent), pecan pie (12 percent), banana cream pie (10 percent) and cherry pie (9 percent).

Chicagoans are fans of the treat as well: the Windy City hosts a competitive local pie throwdown in the annual Bucktown Apple Pie Contest, boasts one of the nation's best pie shops and dutifully embraces pies both sweet and savory.

In honor of this most glorious day of pie observance, HuffPost Chicago has gathered the city's best places for a slice of pie.
