Michael Dorton, Missouri Man, Allegedly Beat Mother With Sledge Hammer, Denied Attack And Fled

Police: Man Beats Mom With Sledge Hammer

Michael Scott James Dorton, a Richmond, Mo., man, who allegedly beat his mother over the head with a sledge hammer, called 911, denied the assault and then fled in his parents' car, was arrested after Facebook posts led police to a bar where his band was scheduled to play.

What's more? According to WDAF, police initially considered the possibility that the 21-year-old's pet monkey, which was loose in the house when Dorton was questioned, had perpetrated the Jan. 15 hammer attack on the man's mother, 39-year-old Stephanie Ann Bryant.

Medical examiners later determined that Bryant's wounds were no accident, but by the time police returned to the home where Darton lives to question him, the suspect was long gone.

Through Facebook, police discovered that the suspect played guitar in a band that had an all-ages show scheduled at a club on Jan. 17. Authorities showed up and apprehended him there, WDAF reported.

"Heard you guys had a wild show last night," wrote a commenter on the band's Facebook wall. "It was on the news your lead guitarist was arrested... Dude that must suck."

Dorton was charged with first degree felony assault and one count of armed criminal action, according to KMZU-FM. His mother was listed in fair condition at an area hospital Tuesday.

Earlier this week, an Oklahoma man was arrested after he allegedly beat his mother to death with the butt of a shotgun.

Arrest reports said the suspect, Henry "Hank" Laird, struck his mother at least 20 times using the weapon, according to FOX 23.
