Sir Paul McCartney has been a vegetarian for a long time. His late wife, Linda, put him up to it. Over the years, she converted many others.

In a Huffington Post blog post, the former Beatle detailed the journey that led him to launch a national campaign for Linda's food company, which will be broadcasted on U.K. TV starting Jan. 28.

In 2009, McCartney launched "Meat Free Monday" to "encourage people to look at their diets and make a meaningful change by giving up meat just one day a week." Since then, vegetarianism has become even more widely accepted, says the singer, as "more and more people are increasingly adopting 'meat free eating.'"

In his opinion it's bigger than simple animal kindness. Increased health awareness and understanding the environmental impact on the plant are major factors. "It's becoming more and more clear that one of the most effective things any individual can do to help the environment is to eat less meat," writes McCartney.
