Alex Sheridan wasn’t sure what to do when her mother’s car started speeding out of control, but the 9-year-old girl knew she had to act fast to save their lives.
When her mother, Jennifer Sheridan, went into diabetic shock and nearly crashed their car on a road in Frankfort, Ill., Alex was terrified, but had the wherewithal to take control, NBC Chicago reports. After the vehicle went off the road and was headed toward trees and a utility pole, Alex reached over, turned off the car and held onto the key until help arrived.
"At one point she went through a stop light and then at another point she was going over 70 miles per hour, and on the secondary road," the relieved elementary-school kid told NBC.
Alex isn’t the only heroic kid who’s probably never been behind a wheel, but still managed to prevent a devastating accident from happening.
When Miranda Bowman’s grandfather died of heart failure while driving last summer, the 12-year-old raced to action, according to phillyBurbs. She took off her seatbelt, slid over to the front seat, pushed the brake and steered the car to safety in the direction of some bushes and trees on the side of the road.
"As much as I am upset about losing my father,” Miranda’s mother, Stephanie, told phillyBurbs, “I can't even imagine how worse this could have been.”
