Like a little slice of suburbia coming to the Far North Side, Edgewater will soon have a drive-thru only Starbucks concept store by summertime.

Plans for a store made entirely of reused shipping containers stretch back to last summer when Eater Chicago reported the concept store — which at the time were only in Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Denver — was slated for construction at 6350 N. Broadway; the site formerly housed an old Checkers Drive-In restaurant.

A Starbucks spokeswoman confirmed to DNAinfo Chicago the company "will be opening a new location in the Edgewater neighborhood this summer," though Ald. Harry Osterman's office said the company is still waiting for the OK on the drive-thru from the city.

Though drive-thru only, DNAinfo reports, according to the company plan, the store would also have a walk-up window and outdoor seating for summer months.

In an earnings conference call with investors Jan. 25, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said roughly 60 percent of the company's new stores would be drive-thrus, according to business blog BrandChannel.

In 2012 interview with Fast Company, Starbucks’s President of Global Development Arthur Rubinfeld called Chicago "one of the early Starbucks entry points."

In August of last year, neighbors at a meeting hosted by Osterman voted unanimously in support of the project, spurring the alderman to throw his support behind the project as well.
