Things Other Than Universal Background Checks That Don't Always Work

The National Rifle Association opposes universal background checks for gun sales because closing the "gun-show loophole" won't prevent every shooting, the organization's chief executive, Wayne LaPierre, said Wednesday in a heated debate on the Senate floor.

“My problem with background checks is you’re never going to get criminals to go through universal background checks,” LaPierre said.

His logic requires ignoring the 11,700 people denied purchases who were charged with gun crimes last year, as Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) reminded him, and others who may have been stopped from buying guns because they didn't want to go through background checks.

Some criminals will always buy guns on the black market, but 85 percent of Americans and 74 percent of NRA members agree that universal background checks are a good idea. Here are some other safety measures that don't always work but are much better than nothing:
