Neapolitan ice cream, the tri-colored dessert that evokes memories of childhood, takes its name from the Neapolitan immigrants who brought their frozen desserts to America during the 19th century.

It has come to mean ice cream containing chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, but initially just meant any ice cream containing any three evenly divided flavors. It is speculated that the now-definitive tastes of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry were simply the most common choices in America.

"Neapolitan" doesn't just refer to ice cream anymore -- the term can describe chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavor pairings in a number of desserts, from marshmallows to poundcake.
