A California special education teacher who pleaded guilty to having an ongoing sexual relationship with a 17-year-old former student is pregnant with the teenager's baby, prosecutors say.
Kelly Watson, 34, was sentenced to probation on Wednesday for sexually assaulting the teenage male student she met in her class at the New Haven residential school in Vista, Ca. Watson may also serve some jail time, according to KNSD-TV.
Watson met the boy while teaching "emotionally disturbed" teens at the school sometime between September 2010 and August 2011. The two allegedly began having sex after McKenzy transferred to a high school in Oceanside, where the boy was not a student.
During the three-year probationary period, Watson -- who is due April 5 -- is not allowed to work with minors, and was ordered by Judge Laura Halgren to undergo counseling. However, she will not have to register as a sex offender, KSWB-TV reported.
Watson got emotional during the sentencing hearing, and the 17-year-old father of her child was also crying, according to XETV-TV.
The student wants to help raise their child, prosecutors said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Judge Halgren said the relationship between Watson and her former student “was not an ideal parenting situation,” but said Watson was not a danger to re-offend, KSWB-TV reported.
